Biographical / Historical
Coterie is a cultural club organized in 1915 by a group of thirteen young women as a venue for local African-American women to learn, discuss current events, and form long-lasting friendships. The group became inactive for awhile, but was re-organized in 1923. Membership is limited to twenty women and the purpose was to "increase our knowledge through books, speakers, programs, or intensive study." Coterie hosts an annual luncheon where it honors longtime members.
