William F. Bechel Letters, August 8, 1869 & January 30, 1872
Scope and Contents
Collection contains two letters: Letter 1. Aug. 1869; Sacramento, Calif. to an unidentified brother, describes a trip from Utah, through Mont., Wash., Ore., to Calif. -- Letter 2. Jan. 30, 1872; Kansas City, Mo. to a Miss Harrisworth. Both were written on Wells, Fargo stationery. Also includes 2 newspaper clippings regarding President Grover Cleveland’s visit to Omaha, Neb. in 1887.

Biographical / Historical
William F. Bechel was born in Ohio on February 27, 1841. He served as a second lieutenant with Company D of the 107th Ohio Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. By 1870 he was working as an express agent in Kit Carson, Greenwood County, Colorado Territory. Bechel married Lucy A. Hainsworth (1848-1925) in Hamilton, Ohio on March 12, 1873. He also served as acting mayor of Omaha, Neb. (ca.1887). Bechel later worked as an auditor, accountant and railroad express agent in Neb. and Colo. He died on July 11, 1907 in Denver, Colo. and is buried in Fairmount Cemetery.
