Mary Smith Culver Letter
Scope and Contents
Collection contains a photocopy of a 5 page typescript of an extended letter or diary written by Mary A. Smith to her sister, Mattie Smith Boggs; the letter describes Smith's trip westward from either St. Joseph, Missouri or Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas in June 1866; additional letter (unsigned) written in 1951 by a relative describes the diary to Culver's great-grandchildren.

Biographical / Historical
Mary A. Smith was born in Ohio in 1844. During the spring and summer of 1866, she traveled with her brother, Frank Smith, westward across the plains. She later married William E. Culver (B. 1843; Michigan-D. 1928; Greeley, Colorado) on April 29, 1867 in Lorain, Ohio and had one child: Minnie A. Culver-Reynolds (B. 1869; Michigan-D. 1901; Greely, Colo.). Mary Smith-Culver died in Bent County, Colorado in July 1884.
