Scope and Contents

The collection includes memos and organizational documents from the Citizens Committee for the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission Report (CORC). There are additional research materials used by the committee, such as the Department of the Interior news releases, and CORC publications, such as the Action for Outdoor Recreation for America booklets. There are also copies of correspondence from John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Laurence Rockefeller.

Biographical / Historical

The Citizens Committee for the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission Report (CORC) was established on January 1, 1963 with the intent to educate the public about the outdoor recreation Resources Review Commission (ORRRC) report and to aid in the implementation of the report’s goals. The ORRRC report, started in 1985 and presented in 1962, inventoried and evaluated the United States’ outdoor recreation resources, measured future demand for outdoor recreation, and recommended programs for meeting public needs. The Citizens Committee worked on promoting the passage of the Land and Water Conservation Fund Bill which was passed on September 3, 1964. Joseph W. Penfold served as Chairman and the Executive Director was Frank Gregg.
