Biographical / Historical
Justina Laurena Warren was born on January 22, 1871, in Knoxville, Illinois. Married Baptist minister John Ford (1892), moved to Chicago, Ill. and was a graduate of Hering Medical Collegeg (1899). She was the first licensed African American female doctor in Denver, Colo., and practiced gynecology, obstetrics, and pediatrics from her home for half a century. In 1950, Ford was allowed to join the Colorado and American Medical Associations; she also became a member of the Denver Medical Society and began working in the Denver General Hospital. At that time, she was still the only female African American doctor in Denver. Died October 14, 1952. Denver Public Library's Ford-Warren Branch Library was named in her honor.
