Biographical / Historical
Walter M. Balch was born in New York in 1923 and enlisted in the Army at Albany, New York in December 1942. At the time of enlistment he was unmarried, had four years of high school and working as a motion picture laboratory technician. Balch joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colorado but later served at Camp Ord, California; Kiska Island, Alaska; Camp Carson, Colorado and Camp Swift, Texas before being sent to Italy. He was assigned to Companies A and F of the 86th Infantry Regiment, before joining Company B of the 87th Infantry Regiment. Balch was wounded in action at Bacucco in March 1945. He attained the rank of Private First Class. Balch died in 1982.
