Biographical / Historical

The 616th Field Artillery Battalion (Pack) was activated on July 15, 1943 at Camp Hale, Colorado as part of the new 10th Light Division (Alpine). The Battalion tained at Camp Hale, Colorado and Camp Swift, Texas. In January 1945, along with the Division's other artillery units, the 616th deployed to Italy, whre it primarily supported the 87th Infantry Regiment in combat operations. Although primarily trained on the 75mm Howitzer, once in Italy the Battalion also fought with the 105mm Howitzers. After the war, the 616th Field Artillery Battalion was transferred to the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Swift, Texas.
