He began training for mountain combat and winter warfare at Camp Hale, Colorado, before being re-assigned to Fort Ord, California. Later he moved on to train at Kiska in the Aleutian Islands before being transferred to Camp Carson, Colorado and then returned back to Camp Hale. Hadley then trained at Camp Swift, Texas before being shipped out to Italy. He began his service in the 87th Infantry Regiment, Service Company before transferring to the 87th Infantry Regiment, Company L, then to Company G. In August 1944 he was assigned to the 110th Mountain Signal Company. James Hadley received a Bronze Star for his service in Italy in 1945 in the Apennine Mountains and the Po River Valley.
