Biographical / Historical

Glidden (painter) was born in Binghamton, N.Y. and educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard. He was a national squash racquets champion, painter, muralist, cartoonist and founder in 1959 of the National Art Museum. During World War II, he served as a naval officer in Hawaii teaching instant recognition of planes and surface ships. He then became a portrait artist. His works are displayed in the Churchill Library, the Fogg Art Museum and the national halls of fame of baseball, basketball and tennis. The National Art Museum of Sport commissioned his portraits of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush. Charles Minot Dole (subject of portrait) was born in 1899 in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts. He was the founder of the National Ski Patrol. He persuaded the War Department to establish the 87th Infantry Mountain Division, later it was expanded into the 10th Mountain Division. He was an active member of the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division. He died on March 14, 1976 in Greenwich, Connecticut.
