Biographical / Historical
John Wolffis was born August 26, 1922, in Muskegon, Michigan, son of Orrie and Jennie Wolffis. He enlisted in the Army January 29, 1943, at Kalamazoo, Michigan. At the time of his enlistment he had completed four years of high school, was a draftsman and was single, without dependents. He joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colorado, and was assigned to Company A of the 86th Infantry Regiment. He was transferred to Camp Swift, Texas, before being sent to Italy. While engaged in combat operations against German forces occupy he was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his actions in the Apennine Mountains and Po valley. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. As a civilian, he married Wilhelmina Kooiman and had a career as a tool designer and engineer. Wolffis died in 1996.
