Biographical / Historical

Henry S. Persse, a native of New York, acquired land south of Denver that he named Roxborough Park after his family's estate in County Galway, Ireland. In 1902 he formed the Roxborough Land Company to develop the property into a premier tourist destination. He never completed the hotel and golf links that he had planned, but he did build a two-story stone house and various ranch structures and guest cottages that attracted Denver's high society. Henry Persse was killed August 26, 1918 when he was struck by a tramway car in Denver. The State of Colorado later acquired a total of 3,319 acres and created Roxborough State Park.
