Biographical / Historical

Stephen A. Smith was born in California on January 9, 1920 and enlisted in the Army on June 27, 1942. At the time of enlistment he was unmarried, and had completed four years of high school. Smith joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colorado were he was assigned to Company B of the 87th Infantry Regiment. He also served at Fort Ord, California; Kiska, Alaska; and Camp Carson, Colorado. In February 1944, Smith transferred out of the 10th Mountain Division to become part of the 90th Infantry Regiment.
