Biographical / Historical
Francis X. Kennedy was born on June 29, 1923 in St. Mary’s, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Emporium High School in Pennsylvania. In 1942 he attended one year of college at the Mont Alto, Pennsylvania Forestry School and then enlisted in the Army on January 1, 1943 at Erie, Pennsylvania. Kennedy was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division and began training at Camp Hale, Colorado, where he was assigned to the 86th Infantry Regiment. Kennedy continued his training at Camp Swift, Texas, serving with the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, C Company of the 86th, Headquarters Company of the 3rd Battalion of the 85th, and I Company of the 85th. He fought with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy, where he was a squad leader. He received a Bronze Star for his actions near Mount Serra on January 30, 1945 and was wounded in action at Mount Belvedere on February 20, 1945. Upon discharge from the Army he had attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. After returning to the United States, Kennedy graduated from Penn State in 1949 and was married to Jeannine Fulton on August 7, 1950. The couple had two children, Patrick and Evelyn. Kennedy made a career in the Pennsylvania State Forestry Department, from which he retired in 1989. Francis Kennedy died on November 17, 1997.
