Biographical / Historical

The 87th Moutain Infantry Regiment was the first unit of ski troops to be activated. The 1st Battalion was activated at Fort Lewis, Washington on November 15, 1941. The 2nd Battalion was activated on May 1, 1942 and the 3rd Battalion followed on June 1, 1942. The Regiment participated in the invasion of Kiska Island on August 15, 1943. Following occupation duty at Kiska, the Regiment returned to the 10th Light Division (Alpine) in February 1944. On November 6, 1944 the Division was reorganized to become the 10th Mountain Division. The 87th was one of three Regiments that made up the Division.
