Biographical / Historical
Albert H. Meinke, Jr. was born in Detriot, Michigan on September 26, 1919 and entered the Army as a 1st Lieutenant on August 2, 1944. He had received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1943. Following military medical training, Meinke was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division and participated during the Division's combat operations in Italy where he received two Bronze Star Medals. He wrote a book about his wartime experiences: Mountain Troops and Medics, wWartime Stories of a Frontline Surgeon in the U.S. Ski Troops (1993) and also authored another book: Hospital History and Medical Practice in My Small Town (2003). Meinke died in March 2009 in Kewadin, Mich.
