Wally Barkeen oral history
Scope and Contents
The interview provides information and personal observations about Barkeen's service at Ft. Lewis, Wa. and his interview for the 87th Mountain Infantry; his time as a Company Commander at Camp Hale; training programs he developed for officers and enlisted men; after arriving in Italy about his transfer from the 10th Mountain Division to HQ of the 6th Army; time in Southern France working the war room at Heidelberg when Germany surrendered; later service as Battery Commander at the American University in England; memories of his family life in Buena Vista while being stationed at Camp Hale .

Biographical / Historical
Wallace I. "Wally" Barkeen was born on May 23, 1912 in Denver, Colo. and attended Colorado State University where he recieved a BS degree in horticulture. Barkeen was commissioned an officer through the Army ROTC program at the University of Oklahoma in 1940. He arrived at Camp Hale, Colo. on January 6, 1943 where he commanded Companies B and C of the 85th Infantry Regiment and later served as the Regiment's Operations Officer. Barkeen retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1960. He died in Denver, Colo. on December 4, 2010.
