Biographical / Historical

Robert F. Ruane was born April 7, 1919 in the District of Columbia. He completed two years of college before enlisting in the Army December 21, 1942 at Fort Myer, Virginia. At the time of his enlistment, he was single and working as a general office clerk. During World War II, Ruane served with the 86th Infantry Regiment, part of the 10th Mountain Division. He was assigned to Company A, and later to the Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion of the 86th. Stationed at Camp Hale, Colorado and Camp Swift, Texas, Ruane received the Bronze Star Medal for his service during the 10th Mountain Division’s Italian Campaign. He died in October 1972 in Washington, D.C.
