Biographical / Historical

Russell L. Swygman was born in Ind. on February 7, 1925 and enlisted in the Army at Ft. Harrison, Ind. on June 28, 1944. At the time of his enlistment he was unmarried, had completed four years of high school, and working as a farmhand. Swygman joined the 10th Mountain Division in Italy, where he was assigned to the Service Company of the 86th Infantry Regiment, but later transferred to Company K. During combat operations in Italy, he was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his actions at the Po River on April 22, 1945. Swygman attained the rank of Private First Class.
