The interview provides information and personal observations about Perkins' experiences: basic training at Camp Roberts, Calif.; time spent at Kiska Island, Alaska; working in the supply room issuing clothing, food, rifles, bedding, etc.; carrying supplies in a trailer in Italy and crossing the Po River; devastation in Italy during the war.

Biographical / Historical

Ruso H. Perkins was born in New Berlin, N.Y. on September 10, 1914 and enlisted in the Army on April 20, 1942 at Fort Niagara, N.Y. He served briefly at Camp Roberts, Calif. before joining the unit that ecame the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Lewis, Wash. Perkins participated in the landings on Kiska Island, Alaska and trained at Camp Hale, Colo. and Camp Swift, Tex. as a member of Company I of the 87th Moutain Infantry Regiment. During combat operations in Italy, he received the Bronze Star medal for his actions during the Apennines and Po River campaigns in Spring 1945. He died on July 2, 2008 in New Berlin, N.Y.
