Biographical / Historical

John C. Meier was born on August 29, 1923 in Norriston, Pa.and enlisted in the Army reserve on November 14, 1942 at State College. At the time of his enlistment Meier was unmarried, and had completed one year of college before being called to active duty. He joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. where he was assigned to Headquarters Company, 604th Field Artilllery Battalion (Pack). During combat operations in Italy, Meier flew reconnaissance missions as an observer with the Division's Artillery Air Section (Rover Joe), coordinating artillery fire from the air. At the end of the war in Europe, he was sent to the Pacific and served during the early occupation of Japan surveying Hiroshima to assess damage for the rebuilding of the city. Meier attained the rank of Corporal. He died on October 15, 2001 in Raleigh, N.C.
