Biographical / Historical

Wayne S. Mackin was born on April 2, 1918 in Cottage Grove, Ore. He graduated from the University of Oregon (1940) before being commissioned a Second Lieutenant at Ft. Benning, Ga. in 1942. Mackin joined the 10th Mountain Division in January 1943 at Camp Hale, Colo. where he became the Commander of Company A, 87th Infantry Regiment. He served as a platoon leader during the Kiska Island invasion, and later transferred with his men to Camp Swift, Tex. before being deployed to Italy. Macking was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his acitons at Mt. Della Spe on April 14, 1945. He was discharged in 1946 having attained the rank of Captain. Mackin died on June 13, 2003 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
