Scope and Contents

The interview provides information and personal observations about Chapman's experiences: being a member of F Company, 86th Infantry Regiment, later as head of a communication platoon in Italy; two years service before joining the 10th Mountain Division; radio operator training at Camp Breckenridge, Ky.; OCS training at Ft. Benning, Ga.; characteristics of leadership in the military; being affected by altitude at Camp Hale, Colo.; becoming head of communications platoon; encounter with Germans on Riva Ridge and his weapon malfunctioning; expedition with Italian mules; being sick and hospitalized with jaundice until the end of the war.

Biographical / Historical

Walter M. "Chappy" Chapman was born on April 16, 1921 and had been in the Army for two years before joining the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. as a 1st Lieutenant. He was assigned to Company F of the 86th Infantry Regiment, and also with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion of Regimental Headquarters. Chapman also served at Camp Swift, Tex. before being deployed to Italy. He received the Bronze Star medal for his actions near Sassomolare, Italy on March 5, 1945.
