Biographical / Historical

Panoramic photography is a photographic technique that utilizes specialized equipment to capture images with elongated fields of view. Developed in Europe during the 1840s, the process involves a lens that rotates around the camera's rear nodal point and uses a curved film plane. As the photograph is taken, the lens pivots around while a slit exposes a vertical strip of film that is aligned with the axis of the lens. Panoramic photographs were used extensively during the late 19th and early to mid-20 centuries to document large groups of people, events, locations, city and townscapes, street scenes, sporting and military groups, and special events.
