Biographical / Historical

The Allied Arts, Inc. was founded in Denver in 1920, by Burnham Hoyt, Anne Evans, Ida Kurse McFarlane, and Jean Chappell Cranmer. Cranmer was the primary founder and remained the guiding force and president of the group until 1956. Cranmer led the group in creating and promoting “a greater public interest in all forms of art--painting, sculpture, music, and literature.” The group gave scholarships to young artists for training and development.

The minus collection –M559, “The Allied Arts Foundation,” added to this collection was a Foundation formed when, in May of 1929, the Allied Arts Board voted to make an official connection with the Denver Art Museum. It is unclear when this alliance dissolved.
