ALBERT N. BROCKMAN PAPERS
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection contains correspondence Brockman sent to various family members during World War II. Limited examples of Brockman's World War II military papers and memorabilia, as well as numerous Camp Hale photographs complete the collection.
World War II correspondence sent by Brockman to various family members comprises the bulk of the series, which also includes limited post-war correspondence received by Brockman. Military papers include induction and discharge papers, rosters, orders and Brockman's citations and commendations.
A selection of Brockman's medals, badges, campaign ribbons and uniform insignia form part of the series. A commemorative booklet, an autograph book and various newspaper clippings and articles related to the Italian campaign complete the series.
A photograph album and numerous loose photographs, most with Brockman's handwritten captions, document training activities and personnel at Camp Hale, Colorado. Limited reunion photographs depict Italian battlefields. A photograph of Brockman's mother, which he carried throughout the Italian Campaign, and several black and white negatives also form part of the series.
The negatives in this collection have been identified as cellulose nitrate and are stored in the STXV freezer (left-hand freezer, 10th Mountain Division nitrate negatives box). Access to these negatives is restricted and requires the permission of an archivist.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Albert N. Brockman was born in Columbia, South Carolina May 13, 1924. His father, Emory W. Brockman, was born in Virginia. His mother, Virginia, was born in New York. Brockman had two younger sisters, Marsha and Betty. In 1943, Brockman graduated from Hatboro High School, Horsham, Pennsylvania, where he was a four-year member of the football team.
Brockman enlisted in the U.S. Army at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 1, 1943. Almost immediately, Brockman was sent to Camp Hale, Colorado, where he was assigned to the 86th Infantry Regiment, which would later become part of the 10th Mountain Division. Initially, Brockman served with Company A. He later transferred to Company M of the 86th, and then to Company G of the 85th. After completing mountain and winter warfare training at Camp Hale, Brockman served at Camp Swift, Texas and in Italy. During combat operations in Italy, Brockman was twice awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He rose to the rank of company first sergeant, making him the highest ranking enlisted man in his company of approximately 200 men. Brockman was discharged at Fort Logan, Colorado on November 26, 1945.
After the war, Brockman graduated from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. He worked as an engineer with Southern Bell for thirty years. Brockman died October 4, 1998 in Jacksonville, Florida. His wife of more than fifty years, Barbara, died two months earlier on August 2, 1998.
