BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

A World War II veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, John Fox Carroll was born April 26, 1922 in Minnesota, the son of Josiah F. and Charlotte F. Carroll. By 1930, his family had moved to Spencer, Iowa. Carroll completed two years of college prior to enlisting in the Army September 17, 1942 at Omaha, Nebraska. Although he received a deferment until September 1944, he reported for active duty at Camp Hale, Colorado in mid-1943. Carroll was initially assigned to Company M of the 85th Infantry Regiment and later transferred to Company K. Wounded in action February 23, 1945, during the battle for Mount Gorgolesco, Carroll returned to the battlefield following a period of convalescence, and received the Bronze Star Medal for his actions near Castel d’Aiano on April 14, 1945.

After the war, Carroll attended Creighton University in Omaha, graduating in 1947. He worked for a year in the trust department of a local bank before accepting a position with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as a bank examiner in Nebraska and Kansas. Carroll lived in Denver throughout most of his career. He was an expert ski racer and climbed most of Colorado's 14,000-foot mountains. Carroll was also active in the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division serving terms as secretary/treasurer and as president of the Association's Rocky Mountain Chapter. Carroll, at age 93, provided materials for this biographical note.
