Identifier: TMD77

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection spans 1943 to 1997 and includes a scrapbook, photo album, correspondence and limited memorabilia that document Tommaney's World War II service with the 10th Mountain Division and his post war activities as a member of the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division.

SERIES 1 WORLD WAR II 1943-1945 BOX 1

The series contains a scrapbook originally created by John Tommaney's mother, Mrs. Thomas Tommaney. The scrapbook's contents were arranged and descriptive comments provided by 10th Mountain Division veteran, John J. Duffy prior to donation to the Resource Center. A copy of the unit journal for the 2nd Battalion, 86th Infantry Regiment documents the daily activities of the battalion throughout the 10th Mountain Division's Italian Campaign. A listing of 10th Mountain Division burials at the Florence American Cemetery completes the series.

SERIES 2 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF THE 10TH MOUNTAIN DIVISION 1992-1997 BOX 1

Tommaney's correspondence received and sent regarding the creation of the Vail, Colorado ski trooper statue comprises the bulk of the series. Many of these letters provide progress reports on the project, while others deal with fund raising efforts. Additional correspondence with Tommaney's Army acquaintances, correspondence regarding veteran affairs and limited memorabilia from various Association activities also form part of the series.

SERIES 3 PHOTOGRAPHS 1943-1945 BOX 1

Photographs and photographic postcards document Tommaney's service at Camp Hale, Colorado and in Italy. These materials were formerly contained in C Photo Album 57. Explanatory notes and individual identifications were provided by 10th Mountain Division veteran, John J. Duffy, prior to donation to the Resource Center and these notes have been retained.

SERIES 4 AUDIO-VISUAL 1993-1995 BOX 1

Two VHS cassettes documenting proposals for the creation of the Vail ski trooper statue comprise the series.

In August 1943, Tommaney transferred to the 90th Infantry Regiment, returning to 2nd Battalion of the 86th in November 1943. During combat operations, Tommaney was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Bronze Star Medal.

Following the war, Tommaney received his Doctor of Laws degree from Columbia University in June 1947. He practiced law in New York City for more than forty years specializing in international estate taxes.

Tommaney married Mary Chase of Salt Lake City on June 6, 1954. The couple had two children, Peter and Elizabeth, both of whom also practiced law.
