SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection spans 1943 to circa 2000 with Woudenberg's World War II letters making up the bulk of the material. Military records, limited memorabilia, and photographs complete the collection.

SERIES 1 PAPERS 1943-1954 BOX 1

The bulk of this series is made up of letters written by Charles A. Woudenberg to his family while stationed at Camp Hale and Camp Swift and during the Italian campaign in 1945. Letters that mention "Ant" refer to his younger brother, Anthony. In 1954, Woudenberg had brief correspondence with an unidentified veteran named Bill regarding lost medical records. Brief correspondence to Charles M. and Nettie from other sources is also. included. Military papers include an income tax withholding record, soldier's individual pay record, and Woudenberg's discharge papers, Bronze Star citation, a government insurance form, and a citation from Major General Hays. Memorabilia includes a New Testament carried by Woudenberg during the war, WWII newspaper clippings, a commendation from Harry S. Truman, Italian Lira, handwritten Bible references, and an order form for Flint Whitlock's book Soldiers on Skis.

SERIES 2 PHOTOGRAPHS CIRCA 1943-CIRCA 2000 BOX 1

Photographs include black and white prints from Camp Hale and black and white postcards from Colorado and Fort Dix in New Jersey. Color photographs include one of Woudenberg at the 10th Mountain Division memorial on Tennessee Pass and an undated group photograph of 10th Mountain Division veterans.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Charles A. Woudenberg was born August 22, 1924, in Paterson, New Jersey, the son of Charles M. and Nettie Woudenberg. He completed high school in 1942 and was working as an industrial clerk when he enlisted in the Army at age 18 on May 22, 1943 at Newark, New Jersey. Woudenberg joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colorado. He was assigned to the headquarters company, 86th Infantry Regiment and also served in Company L, 85th Infantry Regiment. He was stationed at Camp Swift from June to December 1944 and served during the Division's Italian Campaign. During combat operations in Italy, Woudenberg received the Bronze Star Medal for his actions near Mount della Spe from March 16-29, 1945.

After the war Woudenberg married Claire Rienstra on April 24, 1948. He graduated from Rutgers University in June 1955 and was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company. The Woudenbergs had three children: William (1951), Thomas (1954), and Carol (1958). The family moved to Colorado Springs in May 1972 where Woudenberg started his own business, Academy Printing. He retired in 1991.
