EDWIN R. KALMBACH PAPERS
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of items from the years 1924 to 1968. Included in the collection are correspondence, reports, articles, and diary entries by E.R. Kalmbach. Reports and correspondence provide information on the quarterly operations of the Wildlife Research Center in Denver, Colorado, of which Kalmbach was the director. The stated purpose of the Wildlife Research Center was to gather information on wildlife, its habitat, and its relationship to agriculture and public safety. The quarterly reports include updates on research projects throughout the West, and updates on daily operations at the Denver headquarters.
Other correspondence not dating from Kalmbach’s tenure in Denver addresses general wildlife conservation issues and a 1925 cougar attack, which killed a small boy. Also included in the collection are diary and journal entries from Kalmbach’s many trips throughout the United States to examine wildlife field conditions. Some of the states discussed in these diaries include: Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Utah, California, and North Dakota.
Included in the collection are a series of field journals dating from 1911 to 1924. These items are from Kalmbach’s employment with the U.S. Biological Survey. They describe field conditions in a variety of states and regions in America.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Edwin R. Kalmbach is known for his work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Bureau of the Biological Survey. He served as a field biologist and director of the Wildlife Research Laboratory in Denver, Colorado during his more than twenty-year career.
Kalmbach was born April 29, 1884 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was self-educated in the fields of ornithology, botany, and ecology. In 1934, Kalmbach moved from his position with the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey in Washington D.C. to the Wildlife Research Laboratory. He remained at the Laboratory for twenty years in several capacities, including director. Following his retirement in 1954, Kalmbach was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Colorado.
Kalmbach resided in Denver with his wife Kathryn and three children. He died in Denver on August 26, 1972.
