SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Papers of Estella B. Leopold make up this collection. There are newspaper clippings about, and letters written in opposition to, the nomination of Walter J. Hickel as Secretary of the Interior. Also included are clippings, articles and reference material on the fossil beds in what would become the Florissant National Monument in Colorado, and the efforts to prevent their destruction by developers prior to it becoming a national monument.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Estella B. Leopold is Emeritus Professor of Botany and Adjunct Professor in Forest Resources at the University of Washington and Chair, Board of Directors of the Aldo Leopold Foundation, Baraboo, Wisconsin. She is also Aldo Leopold's daughter.

Estella Leopold received her bachelor's degree in botany at the University of Wisconsin in 1938, and her master's degree at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1950. She earned her Ph.D. in 1955 in the conservation program at Yale University.

For twenty years, she worked at the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver, Colorado. In 1975 she was named Director of the Quaternary Research Center at the University of Washington in Seattle.
