HISTORICAL NOTE
The Atchison and Pikes Peak Railroad Company was incorporated on February 11, 1859. The company was founded to survey, locate and construct a railroad 100 miles long, from the town of Atchison, Kansas (on the Missouri River) toward the western-line of Kansas in the direction of Pikes Peak. This section of rail formed part of the railroad and telegraph line authorized by an Act of Congress. As stated in the first mortgage, the purpose was to “aid in the construction of a railroad and telegraph line from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean and to secure to the government the use of the same for postal, military and other purposes.” By 1868, the Atchison and Pikes Peak Railroad Company was also known as the Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad Company.
