SADIE QUIGLEY CAMPBELL PAPERS
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Sadie Q. Campbell collection consists of correspondence and mementos. Letters reflect relationships between mostly women friends and relatives from the 1880s to the 1920s. The letters provide a glimpse into the life of a woman who separated from her husband and raised a daughter in a tightly-knit extended family in northern Colorado around the turn of the 20th century. Many letters offer condolences for the death of Sadie’s 5-year old daughter Helen in 1914. Other letters cover topics such as farm life, domestic duties, travel in California, school, funerals, and deaths of loved ones.
The series is comprised of mostly personal letters addressed to Sadie Quigley Campbell, but it also includes holiday cards, poems and drawings, and elaborate printed announcements and invitations for births, burials, marriages and community events in Loveland, Colorado and Fort Collins, Colorado. It includes letters from Sadie’s mother, Sadie’s sisters and brothers, young nieces and nephews, friends and relatives in northern Colorado and California, and U.S. Representative Charles Timberlake.
The series includes leaflets and bound programs for lectures, concerts and memorial services, a report card, place cards, a business card and Campbell's marriage certificate.
The bulk of the photographs in this series are unidentified studio portraits, possibly depicting family members or friends.
