FLORENCE HERNÁNDEZ-RAMOS PAPERS

 Collection
Identifier: WH2005

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The bulk of this collection is related to the founding and development of bilingual public radio station KUVO, 89.3 FM in Denver, Colorado. Fund-raising, staffing, planning and communication with listeners and volunteers are well represented in these papers. Some of Florence's high school and college activities are represented, but are not very extensive.

SERIES 1 PERSONAL HISTORY 1962-1981 BOX 1

This series comprises mostly high school records including a transcript of grades and other achievements throughout Hernández's schooling in Lamar, Colorado. Her high school and college diploma and degrees are in this series. A subseries consists of the daily calendars and journals she kept. Many of these items relate to the development of KUVO, reflecting how her work on the station was entwined with her personal life.

SERIES 2 FOUNDING AND DEVELOPING KUVO 1983-2007 BOX 1-3

This series comprises the bulk of the collection. It includes Florence Hernández-Ramos's notes and papers when fund-raising efforts were under way prior to getting the license and equipment needed to get KUVO on the air. Issues surrounding the operation of the radio station and her performance as executive director are among these papers as well as other staffing concerns. Ongoing fund-raising and celebrations are well represented. Efforts to broaden the KUVO audience in 2004 are documented with the exploration of translator links with sites in Vail and El Jebel in Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming and Questa, New Mexico.

SERIES 3 KUVO PUBLICATIONS 1985-2003 BOX 3

This series comprises the member newsletter and program guide Oasis, and their volunteer newsletter, Scat Sheet.

SERIES 4 OVERSIZE 1966-1968, n.d. OVFF1

This series comprises some Lamar high school student newspapers, The Savage Chieftain, and a paste-up version of a newsletter for the Five Points Media Center in Denver, Colorado where KUVO moved in 1994.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Florence Dolores Hernández was born in Lamar, Prowers County, Colorado May 3, 1950. She attended Lamar High School and was valedictorian of her 1968 graduating class. She enrolled at the University of Colorado in Boulder, participating in the Educational Opportunity Program as a study skills coordinator and instructor. She worked as a teaching assistant, administrative secretary, and a counselor and resident advisor before graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1973.

Hernández worked as national conference coordinator and trainer for the National Concilio for Chicano Studies followed by a summer internship with Colorado Rural Legal Services in their farm worker program. She attended the University of Colorado School of Law from 1974-1977.

Hernández worked for two years for ARS Auto Parts before becoming the director of the Virginia Blue Center for Colorado Women in Lamar, Colorado. In 1980, Hernández moved to Denver, Colorado and became a Community Food and Nutrition Advocate for Denver Opportunity, Denver's anti-poverty program. In 1981, she was named legal assistant to the Colorado Attorney General, a post she held for two years.

In 1983, Hernández focused her attention on starting the first bilingual public radio station in Denver. Her efforts, and those of many others, were rewarded after nearly two years of fund-raising, planning, and learning, when KUVO, 89.3 FM, went on the air August 29, 1985. It became known as the "Oasis in the City" and gained a significant following among jazz aficionados. It also celebrates a varied Latino, Brazilian, and Mexican music mix.

Hernández received widespread recognition for her achievement. Selected by Denver Magazine as one of "50 Dynamite Denverites" in 1988, she also received the Outstanding Minority Businessperson Award from the Minority and Professional Directory.
