ELIZABETH SCHLOSSER PAPERS
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The bulk of the collection consists of biographical materials about Colorado artists and their artwork. Also included are flyers for art exhibitions at Colorado institutions.
Materials related to Schlosser's art gallery business comprise this series. These materials include newsletters (Visions and Arch) that Schlosser created with articles about Western artists and art in general as well as exhibition flyers for the gallery with inventories listing the artwork available for sale in her gallery.
This series contains folders of primarily Colorado artists arranged alphabetically by last name. The folders include birth and death dates of the artist when available, biographical sketches written by Schlosser or her colleague Stephen Savageau of Stephen Savageau Gallery, newspaper clippings and articles. Painters, sculptors and potters constitute the artists.
Flyers, postcards and lists comprise this series of papers from Western art institutions. Most represent exhibitions of Western art, some of which Schlosser helped manage or to which Schlosser donated artwork for display.
Research notes, articles and newspaper clippings containing information relevant to Schlosser in the writing of her books constitute this series.
The scrapbooks that compose most of this series contain copies of Schlosser's newsletter Vision, postcards and flyers for Schlosser's exhibitions and articles related to her art business. Many of the materials are not glued to the pages, but loose and arranged in chronological order. This series also contains a promotional poster.
The bulk of the series consists of color photographs of artwork by Colorado artists sold by Schlosser in the course of her business. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by the name of the artist with birth and death dates if available. Color photographs of exhibitions comprise a portion of the series. A photograph album contains images of Denver, Colorado sculptures.
Photographs of paintings in this collection will not be reproduced as copyright of the paintings may reside with the artists or heirs.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Elizabeth Schlosser was born in 1949 to Nancy and Bill Schlosser. She grew up in Defiance, Ohio. Her family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado when she was sixteen. She attended a private girls' boarding school, The Ethel Walker School in Connecticut, graduating in 1967. Schlosser graduated from Stanford University in 1971 with a Bachelor's degree in English and received a Master's degree in Urban Planning from the University of Colorado.
After working for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Schlosser became Executive Director of Historic Denver, Inc., from 1979-1984. In 1987, she was Executive Director for the Paramount Theatre Foundation until 1990 when she opened her own art gallery in her home, specializing in Colorado and Rocky Mountain regional and contemporary art. From 1994 to 2001, the Elizabeth Schlosser Fine Art Gallery was located at 311 Detroit Street in Denver, Colorado. From 2001 to 2003, Schlosser again operated her art gallery from her home. In 2003, she closed her art business to run for Denver mayor. Though she was defeated by John Hickenlooper, she continued to be a presence in the art world as a longtime collector, patron and dealer of Colorado and western regional art.
Schlosser curated and juried major art exhibitions, had many speaking engagements, helped secure funding for the Dr. Justina Ford House in 1997 and was series editor for Gallup House Fine Art and Publishing's Documents of Colorado Art in 2005.
Schlosser's husband is Charles Jordan, who was a manager with the Denver Water Department. They have two daughters.
