SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The J. Robert Welch papers includes appraisals, consignments, correspondence, financial records, reference materials and items of personal interest. The bulk of the material dates from 1968 - 2003, and includes photographs of appraised items.

An unpublished manuscript by Marta Teodonno entitled The Universe in Man is included in the collection.

SERIES 1 BUSINESS 1910-2000 BOX 1-3

This series is organized according to subject. Subjects include appraisals, consignments and correspondence. Reference materials consist of The Nation's Treasures - Measured Drawings of Fine Old Furniture in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

SERIES 2 PERSONAL 1869-2000 BOX 3

Material includes correspondence to and from friends and financial interests including radio station KADX. Welch's interests in art, history and the Gibson Jazz Party are represented by newspaper clippings, booklets, concert information, publications and term papers that are included in this series.

SERIES 3 ORGANIZATIONS 1987-2003 BOX 3

The series consists of correspondence, notes, memberships rosters and a financial ledger from Welch's work with the National Association of Dealers in Antiques, Inc.

SERIES 4 PHOTOGRAPHS 1922-1989 PHOTOBOX 1

This series consists of photographs, many of them Polaroid® prints, of items appraised by Welch. Some are dated, most are not, descriptions of items - if any - are very short.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

J. Robert Welch worked in the antique appraisal business in Denver for many years. Colorado Governor Dan Thornton and his wife, Jessie Willock Thornton, May Bonfils Stanton and her husband Charles E. Stanton, Gano Senter, Mrs. C.C. Dobbins, and Clara Van Schaack Humphreys were among his many clients. Additionally, he was in the antique, estate sale and art businesses at The Antique Center and The Liquidators until his retirement.

Welch is the trustee of the Caroline Bancroft Trust, a bequest that provides funds for the Western History/Genealogy Department. Among his interests are the Gibson Jazz Party, Colorado history and art.

Welch was also the proponent and trustee for the Foundation Fund of the National Association of Dealers in Antiques, Inc., founded in Denver in 1961. He was responsible for the donation of approximately $233,000 to the Cooper-Hewitt (the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Design in New York City) Masters Program for a scholarship fund.

PROVENANCE:

Collection acquired as a gift from J. Robert Welch on May 10, 2000. Additional material was donated in April, 2001. Shaunna Brown (daughter) donated more material in August 2003.

SEPARATED MATERIAL

Some materials originally donated with this collection have been moved to other locations within the library. Copies of the wills of Dan Thornton and Jessie W. Thornton and newspaper clippings about the Governor are now in the Governor Daniel Thornton Collection. Business and personal papers of May Bonfils Stanton and Charles E. Stanton are located in the Bonfils - Stanton Collection. Financial records for the Caroline Bancroft Trust can be found in the Caroline Bancroft Collection.
