WESTERN HISTORY AUDIO RECORDINGS COLLECTION
Scope and Contents
Collection contains historical recordings on audio transcriptions of radio programs broadcast by KOA (NBC affiliate station) between 1942-1950. Additional commercial music recordings were produced by Colorado based companies, Malco (Ft. Collins) and Summit Records (Denver). An album of audio transcriptions of poetry and writings by noted Colorado based authors (1939) completes the collection.
Music recordings in this series are by Colorado composers, Walter B. Cooper and Butch La Rita (P.A. Larita, Jr.). Coopers western-themed compositions were recorded regionally by Malco Music Publishing Company based in Ft. Collins. The La Rita recording documents the 1965 flood of the Platte River.
Produced by the NBC Broadcasting company, the audio transcriptions in this series document programs and interviews broadcast on Denver's KOA radio (NBC's affiliate radio station). Interviews include noted Coloradoans attending a Pro Musica-sponsored musical performance by South American singer, Elsie Houston, in the lobby of the Broadway Theater conducted on October 31, 1942. Additionally, a portion of Ben Bezoff's Christmas wartime radio broadcast (1944) for the BBC from London, England; events that occurred during the Mount Wilcox naming celebration on July 31, 1948; an interview with Senator S. R. (Stephen Robert) McNichols discussing the Colorado Highway Program (1950); and an interview (April 1950) with the oldest living alumnus of East High School, the noted botanist, Alice Eastwood (1859-1953) are included.
Series contains a 78 rpm record album with 13 discs produced by Poetry Production in 1939. Donated as a collection to the library in 1940 by poet Clyde Robertson, the records are audio transcriptions of works by noted Colorado based authors: Nellie Burget Miller, Dorothy Stott Shaw, Clyde Robertson, Lillian White Spencer, Edward Davidson, Edna Davis Romig, Thomas Hornsby Ferril, and Jamie Sexton Holme.
