BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Charles Byron Young was born in Leadville, Colorado on June 21, 1883. At the age of two, his parents brought him to Denver, Colorado when his father was transferred to the Globe Smelter in Globeville. At age 16, Young worked as an errand boy for the sports department of the May Company in Denver.

Young married Elizabeth A. Quolke in 1907. They had four children, Albert, George, Catherine and Jack. During this time, Young was placed in charge of the May Company's new sporting goods department. Subsequently, Young worked for Whitney Sporting Goods, Spalding's, Max Cook's and Dave Cook Sporting Goods Company. He retired at age 82.

Because of his interest in sports, Young became involved in Denver amateur sports. He organized baseball, basketball and horseshoes leagues, and, in 1909, the first amateur baseball league for Denver youth. He organized parochial leagues, a senior amateur league, several semi-pro leagues, the Holy Name Parochial League and others.

Young was also interested in theater and began acting as a member of St. Francis's Parish in Denver. He appeared at the Denham, Elitch's and the Broadway theaters, acting in more than 150 roles. He annually recited the verse Face on the Barroom Floor during the Central City Opera Festival.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles named Young "Mr. Colorado Citizen" in 1959. He belonged to the United Workers for the Blind of Colorado and the Knights of Columbus.

Young died January 4, 1973 in Denver, Colorado.
