Biographical / Historical

Joseph Thornell Stephens was born on September 2, 1917 in Clarinda, Iowa to Homer S. Stephens and Frances E. Thornell. He joined the United States Army at the age of 21 on June 5, 1939. Stephens became a commissioned officer on February 25, 1941 and rose to the rank of Major by November 9, 1942. He joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colorado and served with the 605th Field Artillery Battalion Headquarters. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal in 1945 for his actions in the Apennine Mountains and Po Valley in Italy. Stephens passed away on March 1, 2004.
