The slides have been arranged and described by Allen Nossaman using a alphanumeric system. Each photo is described in an index that follows this system. The indexes have been digitized and are available online at:

To find the item's physical location, use the finding aid container list. Example: item A-18A in index is located within the "AA" slides, and can be found in slides AA-AP in PhotoBox 1.
Images include photos of Colorado mining towns, buildings, mountains, landscapes, parades, the Silverton Brass Band, and railroads. There are also photos of vacations and family/friends. Some slides were removed from the collection by the Nossaman family. These slides are indicated in the index with a dot by the description of the photo.

Biographical / Historical
Allen Nossaman was a historian, author and journalist. He published and edited The Silverton Standard and Miner in Silverton, Colorado. He served as a county judge, city treasurer, county land-use administrator and worked at the Durango-Silveton narrow gauage railroad. Nossaman was born October 22, 1939 to parents Carl and Helen Nossaman. He moved to the Western Slope of Colorado in 1955 when his parents bought a small newspaper in Cedaredge. He spent most of his adult life in Silverton, Colorado. He wrote Many more mountains: an illustrated history of the earliest exploration in the high San Juans of southwestern Colorado and the settlement and founding of Silverton, Colorado (3 volumes) and complied the San Juan County Newspaper Index. Nossaman passed away in 2006. The San Juan County Historical Society named the Allen Nossaman Memorial Archive in his honor.
