Biographical / Historical
James A. Nussbaum was born in 1923 in Washington. He enlisted in the Army on December 4, 1942, at Tacoma, Washington. At the time of his enlistment he had completed four years of high school and was single, without dependents. He joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colorado, and was assigned to Company K of the 87th Infantry Regiment. He later served with the 10th Mountain Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, the Mountain Training Group, and Company E of the 85th Infantry Regiment. He was transferred to Camp Swift, Texas, before being sent to Italy. While engaged in combat operations against German forces occupying Italy, he was wounded in action on February 22, 1945, at Mt. della Torraccia. Nussbaum attained the rank of Sergeant.
