Biographical / Historical

Walter E. “Howdy” Howard was born on April 9, 1917 in Woodland, California. His mother, MayBelle, was a homemaker and his father, Walter, was a professor. Howard enlisted in the Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor, despite being married and in the midst of a PhD program in Animal Ecology at the University of Michigan. Howard transferred out of the 10th Mountain Division after the Kiska invasion and continued his military service in Burma with the US Typhus Commission. He was discharged from the Army on January 1, 1946. After the war, Walter completed his PhD from the University of Michigan. He was married to Elizabeth Ann Howard and has three children. Until his retirement, Howard was Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Biology and Animal Ecology at the University of California, Davis.
