Biographical / Historical
Robert N. Dunphy was born on November 22, 1916 to Robert B. and Mathilda (Weber) Dunphy in Dubuque, Iowa. Dunphy was a fireman for the City of Dubuque when he was drafted on December 9, 1943. He joined the Army at Camp Dodge Herrold, Iowa and was later assigned to the 10th Mountain Division in the fall of 1944 at Camp Swift, Texas. A member of the 85th Infantry Regiment, Company F, Dunphy rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. At the end of 1944, Dunphy deployed with the Division to Italy, where he saw combat for five months. He was wounded in action on February 21, 1945 but was able to rejoin his unit when he was discharged from the hospital in March. After returning to the United States in August 1945, Dunphy was honorably discharged on November 24. He died on February 7, 1999.
