Biographical / Historical

Mary Martha Shivers Culpin was born in 1942 to Arley Cruse Shivers and Virginia Adolphus Shivers. She graduated from Aransas County High School, Rockport, Texas, in 1960 as class valedictorian. She graduated from the University of Colorado Denver with a Bachelor of Arts in History in December 1979 and was honored with a Phi Beta Kappa award. She married Alan Culpin, owner of Abracadabra Books (Denver), in 1978.

On January 29, 1978, Culpin joined the Rocky Mountain Regional Office of the National Park Service as a Co-Operative Education Student. The following year, she was hired as a Research Historian and later became Regional Historian for the Rocky Mountain Region. Culpin also worked for both the Cultural Resources Branch (History and Historic Preservation) and for the Natural Resources Branch (Federal Reserve Water Rights) of the National Park Service. She retired in 1999.
