Smith to her sister, Mattie Smith Boggs; the letter describes Smith's trip westward from either St. Joseph, Missouri or Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas in June 1866; additional letter (unsigned) written in 1951 by a relative describes the diary to Culver's great-grandchildren.
